About Us

Many years ago, when Sean and Elaine were preparing to get married in 1996, 3 months before the wedding day, Elaine’s mother died suddenly. She was the youngest of a family of 9, losing her father, eldest brother and nephew before this. It took a very hard toll on the family. Having experienced so many close family deaths within such a short period of time, there was a great fear that their beloved mother was going to be placed into a cold, dark grave, like they had seen so many times before. As Sean recognised that this would be a traumatic experience to witness again at such a young age, he along with his brother in law Jim, dressed the inside of the grave with seasonal hawthorn from the top to the bottom of the grave. It left a lasting impression on Elaine and her siblings, minimizing the upset
and creating a comforting and consoling memory of their mothers final resting place.
Unfortunately, that was to not be the end to the tragedy for this family, Elaine also lost her niece to cancer a few years later and Sean and Jim were asked to repeat the process again for the grave. At the time, Sean was self-employed, as a haulage contractor and would be called away on many occasions to dress the graves of neighbours, friends, family and even strangers. It got so frequently requested that they felt that they had no choice but to follow through on the inspiration of the words given to them by bereaved families and through their own personal experiences that they had realised that the graveside part of the funeral is the final separation and that the dressing of the grave eases the upset associated with the burial of a loved one and creates a comforting and consoling memory. Especially for children attending the graveside as it can be a harrowing experience for them and can be associated with traumatic memories and they believe that dressing the grave can help give a sense of comfort which allows them to say their final goodbyes in a more calming atmosphere. Out of this inspiration ‘Going Home Funeral Hire Services’ was created. With the vast amount of experiences gained through out the years since going home was set up, we identified other issues that could be addressed around the graveside and now believe we cover every aspect to ensure a smooth comforting and consoling atmosphere to ease the upset that can relate to the burial of a loved one. Our service is environmentally friendly with a reusable system that allows everything to be removed from in and around the grave after the service.
Initially Elaine fronted the business until Sean sold off his haulage business in 2015. Elaine now runs her own bed and breakfast ‘Riverside lodge’ near Carlingford, while Sean took over the day to day running of Going Home. He is now hoping to expand his services where it may be requested.
